As a photographer, I can confidently say that an engagement session is one of the most valuable parts of the wedding experience, which is why I offer a complimentary engagement session with every wedding package, and it has very little to do with just getting pretty photos (though that’s definitely a bonus).
An engagement session is about connection, comfort, and trust. It’s about setting the foundation for how your wedding day will feel in front of the camera, and ultimately, how your story will be told.
Here’s why I believe engagement sessions are so important.

Almost every couple tells me the same thing at the beginning: “We’re awkward in photos.” And that’s completely normal. Most people aren’t photographed professionally on a regular basis.
An engagement session gives you the chance to experience what it’s like to be photographed without the pressure of a wedding timeline, guests watching, or emotions running high. You’ll learn how I guide you, pose you naturally, and help you feel relaxed. By the time your wedding day arrives, being in front of my camera feels familiar, and that confidence shows in your photos.
Your photographer is one of the people who will spend the most time with you on your wedding day. Trust matters.
An engagement session allows us to work together before the big day. I learn how you interact as a couple, what makes you laugh, how you naturally connect, and what feels most like you. You learn my style, my energy, and how I direct moments. That relationship makes a huge difference when it’s time to photograph emotional, once-in-a-lifetime moments.
Engagement sessions are a great way to discover your preferences. Maybe you love candid moments more than posed ones. Maybe you realize you prefer certain angles or movements. This feedback helps me tailor your wedding day photography even more intentionally.
It also helps you feel more confident going into the wedding knowing what works best for you.
Engagement photos aren’t just for social media (though they’re great for that too). Many couples use them for:
They become part of your story, capturing this season of excitement, anticipation, and joy before the wedding day arrives.
When you’ve already experienced a session with your photographer, wedding day portraits move faster and feel more natural. You won’t be wondering what to do or how to stand, you’ll already know. That means more time enjoying your day and less time worrying about photos.
No timelines. No expectations. Just the two of you, being yourselves.
An engagement session isn’t just another item on a wedding checklist, it’s an investment in your experience and in the way your story is documented. When you feel comfortable, connected, and confident, your photos reflect that in the most authentic way.
From a photographer’s perspective, engagement sessions allow me to tell your story better. And from a human perspective, they allow you to start your wedding journey feeling relaxed, excited, and truly seen.
And that’s something worth capturing.
